Funding source for salary increases not certain
The governor's proposed FY14 budget includes additional operating funds for Iowa State. However, zero to modest tuition rate hikes and the slim possibility of inclusion in a salary bill creates uncertainty about salary increases next year.

Around campus

ISU part of new statewide effort to improve third-grade literacy
Iowa State is part of a new statewide initiative to make all students proficient in reading by the end of third grade. The effort is taking place outside the political process and requires no action by the Iowa Legislature.

Students trained for counselor role at campus financial clinic
A need to serve more Iowa State students returns the financial counseling clinic to its original mission: assist students and train student counselors through real experience with clients.

Hint of spring in the gardens
Reiman Gardens will preview its "More Than Meets the Iowa" theme year with events and admission specials this weekend.

Farm House exhibition sheds light on Art Nouveau ("new art") period
The latest exhibition at the Farm House Museum, "Art Nouveau: Lighting with Style," runs through Oct. 25. It features light fixtures, furniture and decorative objects from prominent Art Nouveau artists, including Louis Comfort Tiffany, Emile Galle, Victor Durand, Daum, Loetz, Rookwood and Frederick Carder. The museum is open Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. Admission is free, though a $3 donation is suggested. Museums director Lynette Pohlman will highlight pieces in the collection during a Jan. 31 program (7 p.m., Farm House Museum).

Dance Marathon fundraiser is Jan. 26
Dance Marathon, an annual student fundraiser to benefit the University of Iowa Children's Hospital, will be held Saturday, Jan. 26 (9 a.m.-midnight, MU Great Hall). Last year, more than 900 Iowa State student dancerss raised $380,000.

On the ice: Cyclones vs. Hawkeyes
The Cyclone hockey team and the University of Iowa hockey club will play a home-and-away series this weekend. Friday night's game is in Ames (7:30 p.m., Ames/ISU Ice Arena, adults $10), and Sunday afternoon's game is in Cedar Rapids (1:15 p.m., Cedar Rapids Ice Arena, 1100 Rockford Rd. SW).

Not your typical comic books
An exhibit in the College of Design's Gallery 181 features more than 100 vintage comix (X-rated) from 1968 to 1975, the heyday of the underground press. "Legion of Indecency" runs through Feb. 10. The gallery is open daily (10 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Friday, noon-4 p.m. weekends).
