agenda when the state Board of Regents meets at
the Memorial Union Aug. 7-8. Harl Commons is anything
but common The new student-centered area carved
out of the Curtiss Hall "basement" beneath the auditorium is
bright and modern and on schedule to be ready for student
traffic on the first day of class.

Register
now for new faculty orientation and university teaching
seminar Faculty members who are new to Iowa
State (since last September) are invited to reserve
Aug. 20-21 for two events
that will help jump-start their ISU careers. A teaching
seminar will be held Tuesday, Aug. 20 (8 a.m.-4 p.m.,
Memorial Union); a new faculty orientation will be held
Wednesday, Aug. 21 (7:45 a.m.-4 p.m., Reiman
Gardens). Registration is free.

the beaten path A (nearly) secret enclosed courtyard
surrounded by the Food Sciences Building boasts an art-inspired
fountain backdrop for studying, lunching and
relaxing. Experience is a factor in firefighter
response ISU researchers used virtual simulations
to measure stress levels and decision-making among veteran and
novice firefighters in emergency situations. The results were
contrary to conventional wisdom.

MU's
art lending house is Aug. 7-8
The Memorial Union's art lending collection features nearly 175 framed
prints, posters and paintings available for rent for a full or half
year, typically for $10 to $25. The collection provides an
inexpensive way to improve office or home. The annual
art lending open house will be held Aug. 7 (10
a.m.-3 p.m.) and Aug. 8 (10 a.m.-noon) in the browsing library on
the ground level. Proceeds from rentals support art programs at the
