Inside newsPresidential graduate student initiative launched The initiative includes recruiting top doctoral students in strategic areas, matching funds to help colleges recruit graduate students, and providing bridge funding to help researchers manage projects when there are delays or gaps in external funding. Around campusAcademic advising award recipients announced The University Academic Advising Committee has announced the recipients of the 2013-14 advising awards, including adviser of the year in each college, and early achievement and advising impact awards. The group is honored on a website and in a Memorial Union display (ground floor) that will be up Nov. 18-29. Partnership shortens time to a law degree Iowa State students can now earn a bachelor's degree and law degree in six years through a new partnership the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences has with Drake University and the University of Iowa. The accelerated dual-degree program is known as the "3+3 Program." Warm connections between college, Uganda The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences will forward 50 percent of the commissions it receives from the Global Café in Curtiss Hall's Harl Commons back into its programs to support Ugandan children and farm families. Juggling: One avenue to problem solving Mathematics is the science of studying patterns and juggling is the art of controlling patterns, says assistant math professor Steve Butler, whose students juggle in class. Applying math to the sport allows jugglers to explore the limits of what is possible, calculate the number of different patterns and find connections between patterns.

CMA award winner performs in MU on Dec. 5
Kacey Musgraves, Country Music Association's New Artist of the Year, will give a Dec. 5 concert in the MU Great Hall (8 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m.). Tickets are $25 ($20 for ISU students with ID) and available at the MU Maintenance Shop box office, by phone (4-8349) or online via MidwesTIX.
