Senate looks at changes to academic programs, handbook policies The Faculty Senate closed out the semester at its Dec. 10 meeting with unanimous approval of two new academic programs and the discontinuation of another. A slew of handbook policy revisions are on the docket for 2014. Library is testing food/beverage container recycling through Jan. 31 GSB's director of sustainability puts together the proposal to keep recyclables out of the trash; FPM and library also partner on the project. Third rent-by-the-hour vehicle delivered to campus Rental volume reaches threshold for third CarShare vehicle at Iowa State; the additional location will serve north campus.

Blackboard Learn announcements from CELT:
Instructors: Submit final grades Instructors may submit final grades from their Bb Learn course(s) beginning Dec. 12. The open period for final grade submission expires at 2:15 p.m. on Dec. 27.
Course creation processing during finals week To ensure optimum Blackboard system performance during finals week, requests for copying (renewing) or creating new Bb Learn courses only will be processed between 3 a.m. and 6 a.m. Course creation requests submitted outside of this period will be queued for later processing. Holiday hours Dec. 24-25 are university holidays. Blackboard Learn support will not be available by phone or email on those days.

Around campusSpring faculty professional development programs announced The office of the vice president and provost reports that spring programming for faculty professional development is scheduled. This includes provost office programs as well as tele-workshops offered through the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity, for which ISU faculty can activate an account at no cost.
Deceased man is ISU student The body found near a laundry room in Wilson Hall on Tuesday has been identified as ISU freshman Eltahir Mohamed Osman.
Two more years of funding for SP@ISU Strengthening the Professoriate at Iowa State University has received $498,941 in funding for the remaining two years of the project, for total funding of $1,248,727 from the National Science Foundation. SP@ISU supports faculty as they integrate "broader impact" activities into their research and promote awareness of broader impacts resources and evaluation. SP@ISU kicked off in July 2010.
Cross-cultural study looks at media impact on youth Researchers found that greater exposure to prosocial media -- video games, movies or TV shows that portray helpful, caring and cooperative behaviors -- resulted in higher levels of prosocial behavior among children and adolescents, regardless of culture.
Honors students perform live for comedy final exam Seventeen University Honors program students performed live in the MU Maintenance Shop last week to complete their fall class in stand-up comedy. Video story.

More Cy-Hawk events this week
Three more athletic competitions -- men's and women's basketball, and swimming and diving -- in the annual Iowa State-Iowa Cy-Hawk Series happen Thursday and Friday in Ames. It's "color it cardinal" week for Cyclone fans; wear your cardinal apparel to the events.
Art makes a great holiday gift Students in the integrated studio arts program are selling artwork they've created at the College of Design Art Club (CODAC) art sale, Dec. 12-13 (10 a.m.-4 p.m., College of Design foyer). Artwork includes ceramics, prints, photos, jewelry and textiles. Prices range from $5 to $150. 'Tis the season for The Nutcracker Ballet Iowa State Center will present its 33rd annual production of The Nutcracker Ballet Dec. 14 (1:30 and 7:30 p.m.) and Dec. 15 (1:30 p.m.) at Stephens Auditorium.
