Coal takes a back seat

Iowa State will burn less coal and more natural gas once three new 80-ton boilers are installed at the power plant. Green benefits from the boiler update include fewer gas and particulate emissions.

 

More Miller fellowship awards

Five faculty proposals to develop new approaches for teaching undergraduate courses will share Miller Faculty Fellowship funds in 2015-16.

HS culinary competition comes to campus on Monday

ISU's hospitality management program is hosting the 2015 Iowa ProStart Invitational, a competition that gives high school teams 60 minutes to prepare a three-course meal from provided ingredients and two butane burners. The event is Monday, March 2, in the Memorial Union.


Improving mental health care for veterans

Distinguished Professor of statistics Alicia Carriquiry is working to identify roadblocks that prevent veterans from getting the mental health services they need.

Arts and events

Play showcases Iowans in Civil War

ISU Theatre's original production of Love and Honor: Iowa in the Civil War begins its two-weekend run on Friday, Feb. 27, at Fisher Theater. The show, based in part on historical documents from University Archives, was written by professor Jane Cox.

 

Big 12 indoor track comes to campus Friday-Saturday

Iowa State will host the men's and women's Big 12 Conference indoor track and field championships Friday (10 a.m.-10 p.m.) and Saturday (noon-6 p.m.), Feb. 27-28, in the Lied Center. A two-day pass is $10 ($5 for high school students and younger); single-day admission is $7 ($3 for youth).

 

One-woman play is in MU Great Hall on March 1

One Drop of Love, a memoir performance starring Fanshen Cox DiGiovanni, comes to campus on Sunday, March 1 (7-8 p.m., MU Great Hall, doors open at 6:30 p.m.). Co-produced with Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, the performance includes film images, animation and photos to span 400 years and suggest how the notion of 'race' came to be in this country. Admission is free; the public is welcome.

 

STOMP returns to Ames for a two-night run

STOMP, the percussion sensation, stops at Stephens Auditorium for two performances, March 4-5 (7:30 p.m. nightly). Tickets, $24-$63 ($33 for youth and ISU students), are available at the Iowa State Center ticket office or through Ticketmaster.
