Faculty professional development requests go to regents
Also on the agenda for the state Board of Regents' Dec. 2 meeting is a vote on 2016-17 tuition and mandatory fees, an update on three building projects and two honorary degree requests.

Game-based learning is fun and games, and that's OK
Larysa Nadolny, assistant professor in the School of Education, has transformed her Curriculum and Instruction 202 course from traditional lectures and labs to a game-based learning format. The result? An increase in student attendance and participation.

Nominations, applications sought for EO director post
A national search has begun to hire a director for the office of equal opportunity. The application deadline for guaranteed consideration is Dec. 7.

Hallway seating
The first set of hallway benches, made by Iowa Prison Industries from recycled campus wood, has been installed in high-use classroom buildings.

Major updates coming for business, student technology systems
After months of collaborative planning, work is underway to move business and student information applications from a 1970s era mainframe to a cloud-based system.

Change agent: Zlatan Krizan
This associate professor of psychology, who studies how poor sleep influences emotions, motivations and social interaction patterns, is profiled in a series about ISU faculty and researchers whose ideas bring positive changes to the world.

Crowdfunding platform has second project
FundISU, a fundraising website for university projects seeking $10,000 or less, has its second entry: a request in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences that would assist a larger effort to build a training center in Uganda's Kamuli District. The deadline to contribute is Dec. 31.

Task force: Consider tech transfer accomplishments in P&T decisions
The Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities is calling for public research universities to consider technology transfer issues in tenure and promotion decisions. In a report released this week, APLU defines technology transfer loosely as "entrepreneurship, innovation and technology-based economic development activities," and says that faculty members who participate in it should be credited in personnel decisions. ISU senior vice president and provost Jonathan Wickert co-chaired the APLU task force that produced the report.

Record your comments about any item on the state Board of Regents' December agenda at a Nov. 19 public hearing (4-5 p.m., MU Oak Room). The board's Dec. 2 telephonic meeting will be Ames-based.

Mythbusters tour makes Ames stop
Jamie Hyneman and Adam Savage, co-hosts of Discovery Channel's Mythbusters series, have taken their show on the road. "Mythbusters: Jamie and Adam Unleashed," an interactive audience show, takes the stage at Stephens Auditorium on Nov. 30.
