RAGBRAI cyclists wowed by trip through Trice
Listening to what cyclists were saying as they took in the Cyclone Loop, the spin through Jack Trice Stadium was a highlight of the RAGBRAI overnight stay in Ames.

Expect Bissell, Union, Welch roads to reopen by Aug. 10
Roads in the southwest part of campus dug up since March will be back in service early next month. Multiple utility and road projects were phased over two summers, and work will resume next March.

Recreation services plans to redo intramural fields east of stadium
On the heels of improvements to intramural fields east of the Maple Willow Larch residence complex, recreation services proposes similar upgrades totaling $10 million to its fields east of Jack Trice Stadium.

Freeman continues in adviser role
University Professor of agricultural and biosystems engineering Steve Freeman will continue to serve as faculty adviser to the president, a position he's had since 2013. His new three-year, half-time appointment began July 1.

Maximizing class time even when absent
An initiative the Student Loan Education Office launched two years ago, Don't Cancel That Class, makes it easy to fill an open period with a guest presentation.

Iowa State will lead national institute to fight antimicrobial resistance
The Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges today announced a new national institute to address a global public health concern: antimicrobial resistance. It will be housed at Iowa State.

Joint Iowa State, Iowa teams win seed grants to launch bioscience projects
In an effort to spur greater collaboration between bioscience researchers at Iowa State and the University of Iowa, the two schools have awarded seed grants to help investigators build teams, collect data, grow projects and win grants. Each of the five seed grants is $50,000 spread over two years.

Despite negative consequences, benevolent sexism helps in search for mate
New research by postdoctoral researcher Pelin Gul explores how women respond to benevolent sexism from men, gestures such as opening the door and paying for dinner.

Arts and events
Mix things up a bit
The Memorial Union will hold its art lending open house Tuesday, July 31 (10 a.m.-3 p.m.) and Wednesday, Aug. 1 (10 a.m.-1 p.m.) in the browsing library on the first floor (food court level). Rent framed posters, paintings and prints for a semester or a year. Most pieces rent for $10-$25. Proceeds support art programs at the Memorial Union.
