New initiative requires immediate academic help for at-risk freshmen
A new program launching this fall will assure immediate academic intervention for first-year students who didn't automatically qualify for admission, a group of about 200 undergraduates often needing extra support in their crucial first months on campus.
Five questions for an entrepreneur ambassador
Karen Kerns is midway through a three-year entrepreneur in residence appointment, helping lead President Wendy Wintersteen's entrepreneurship and innovation initiative.
Regents will review budgets next week Meeting via telephone Aug. 1, the state Board of Regents will approve budgets for the fiscal year that began July 1. Also on the agenda is a new east Ames location for ISU's central receiving facility.
New state relations officer arrives next month
Alumna Carolann Jensen, chief operations officer for the Iowa Finance Authority, will become the state relations officer for Iowa State on Aug. 26.

Family experience influences diabetes risk, management for African Americans
Iowa State researchers interviewed parents and adult children in 20 African American families with strong histories of Type 2 diabetes to understand how many myths and misconceptions about the disease often are passed from one generation to the next.
Predicting when a machine will fail
A team of Iowa State researchers has received a new National Science Foundation grant for a project that aims to create a low-cost, easy-to-implement system to predict mechanical failures in agricultural and industrial machinery.

Niang to visit bookstore Friday afternoon
Former Cyclone men's basketball player Georges Niang will be at the ISU Book Store, Memorial Union, Friday, July 26 (3-4 pm.) for a signing event to help launch the Cyclone Legends line.
CALS grad students to hold Aug. 1 field day Graduate students in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences' extension and outreach course are hosting an Aug. 1 open house at the Field Extension Education Laboratory (9 a.m.-noon, Ag Engineering Agronomy Research Farm, Highway 30, near Boone). The students will talk about the impact of weather on crop conditions, disease and insect management. Visitors should register online by July 29.
