Operations and finance division leader starts Sept. 3

Dr. Sean Reeder, vice chancellor for finance and administration at the University of Missouri, Kansas City, has been selected as senior vice president for operations and finance.


Fair means experience, exposure for veterinary students

Six fourth-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students are working at the Iowa State Fair to protect the health and safety of every animal. It's among the numerous two-week rotations fourth-year students complete during their final year.

Christine Prescott-Jacobsen began serving as director of Reiman Gardens on Aug. 1. She earned her bachelor's degree at Iowa State in animal ecology.


Four maidens return to campus

State DEI law takes effect next July

University leaders are working with the state Board of Regents to determine what actions are needed to comply with a new law that imposes restrictions on diversity, equity and inclusion offices at the regent universities.


Another milestone this week for Workday

With a final student data upload to Workday from the university's legacy systems at the end of this week, users no longer will complete processes in the legacy systems, known as ADIN and AccessPlus. They'll become read-only.


Operating budget grows by nearly 5%

Additional tuition revenue accounts for most of the growth in Iowa State's general fund budget for the year that began July 1.


Third Cyclone Welcome Weekend launches new semester

Saturday morning breakfast on central campus, including two sessions of yoga with goats, is part of fun, safe events Aug. 23-25 to welcome students to the new academic year.

LeBaron update: Demolition begins next week

Following seven weeks of abatement and materials removal indoors this summer, crews are ready to demolish the 66-year-old LeBaron Hall. Removal of the structure is expected to take about two weeks.


Librarians promote AI literacy

A task force at university library will explore opportunities to coordinate artificial intelligence efforts across library units and with campus partners. AI is addressed in the Library 1600 course and members are developing an AI 'playground' to give faculty, staff and students a venue to try out AI tools. These efforts follow a workshop series with Extension and Outreach assistance for library staff.


Winner winner (for your) chicken dinner?

A recap of the state, regional and international awards received for the 2023 wines -- red, white and rosé -- from the Iowa State University Winery. The most recent were earned at the 2024 Iowa State Fair.


Gardens pathway honors volunteers

Reiman Gardens opened its "Volunteer Legacy Pathway," leading to the Sycamore Falls section of the gardens, honoring the dedication and contributions of its volunteers who in 2023 alone contributed more than 18,000 hours to the facility. The Carroll Marty Pergola honors the Ames volunteer.

Arts and events

Soccer team competes twice at home

The Cyclone soccer squad kicks off its 2024 season with two home games this weekend: Thursday, Aug. 15, vs Western Illinois and Sunday, Aug. 18, vs Creighton. Both games begin at 6 p.m. at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Admission is free.


Cardinal and Gold scrimmage is Saturday

The Cyclone volleyball squad will hold its preseason intrasquad scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 17 (1 p.m., Hilton Coliseum). Admission is free.


Goldfinch Room concert heads outside

The Buckmiller Schwager Band performs on Tuesday, Aug. 20 (6:30 p.m., Stephens Auditorium lawn). Tickets are $5 online in advance, $10 at the door.


Quilt show hosted at Reiman Gardens

The Iowa Quilters Guild will host a Garden Quilt Show Aug. 23-25 (10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday and Saturday, until 4 p.m. Sunday, Reiman Gardens). Garden-themed quilts created by Midwesterners will be on display, and the show will award prizes in several categories. Visitors to the quilt show pay gardens admission (free for members and ISU students).


Bug Village returns Aug. 24

The Insect Zoo's annual Bug Village is Saturday, Aug. 24 (noon-3 p.m., Advanced Teaching and Research Building) and is free to the public. More than 150 species of living arthropods will be on display. People with special sensory needs can come early (11 a.m.-noon) to enjoy the displays.
