During preview week (Sept. 9), campus users are encouraged to check their verification factors (transferred last month) and set up additional factors for a smooth experience on Sept. 16, when Microsoft becomes Iowa State's sign-on dashboard. Two timely emails will assist with the transition.

Growing crops underneath solar panels

Iowa State researchers are studying how fruits and vegetables grow underneath solar panels at the Alliant Energy Solar Farm. The idea -- known as agrivoltaics -- could allow dual use on more farmland. (Video story)


Program tracks mosquito trends

Plant pathology, entomology and microbiology associate professor Ryan Smith leads the Iowa Mosquito Surveillance Program -- established in the 1960s -- which traps and identifies mosquitoes in 15 counties across the state. The data helps assess the number of mosquitoes in the state, what diseases they carry and whether they are a threat to humans. 


Growing Together Iowa fights food insecurity

Food insecurity is real, and it's probably happening in your neighborhood. That's why Extension and Outreach Master Gardener volunteers collaborate with community organizations on Growing Together Iowa projects. Each summer, volunteers plant gardens and donate the produce to local food pantries, along with recipes and tips for using the fresh produce. (Includes video story)

Arts and events

Volleyball squad hosts Cyclone Invitational

Cyclone volleyball hosts a four-team round-robin tournament Sept. 5-8 at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones play Thursday (6:30 p.m., vs Toledo), Friday (6:30 p.m., vs Wake Forest) and Saturday (4 p.m., vs Illinois). Tickets ($5) are good for both matches that day. The team's Cy-Hawk contest is Wednesday, Sept. 11 (6:30 p.m., Hilton Coliseum).


Cyclone soccer at home for two

The women's soccer team has two nonconference matches this week, with the University of Michigan on Thursday, Sept. 5 (6 p.m.) and Northern Colorado on Sunday, Sept. 8 (1 p.m., Senior Day) at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Admission is free.


Fall musical fanfare is Sunday

Join members of the music faculty for their annual fanfare concert to kick off a new academic year on Sunday, Sept. 8 (3-4 p.m., Tye Recital Hall, Simon Estes Building, and livestreamed). Admission is free.


Lecture: Presidential debates, then and now

The university's 2024 Constitution Day lecture, "The History of Presidential Debates, 1960-Present," will be presented by Karen Kedrowski, director of the Catt Center for Women and Politics and professor of political science, on Thursday, Sept. 12 (6 p.m., 2630 Memorial Union). She'll provide a historical perspective of U.S. presidential debates and discuss what we've seen so far in this election.
