Enrollment climbs this fall
Iowa State's enrollment remains strong, with 30,432 students on campus this fall, up 255 from last year. The student body includes a first-year class of 5,906 students, also an increase over last fall.
Naming proposals, insurance premiums are on regents' docket
University leaders have proposed a new name for the College of Human Sciences -- Health and Human Sciences -- and for the Administrative Services Building: Warren Madden Building, for the retired senior leader and alumnus.
University prepares for phase 2 of federal overtime pay changes
The Jan. 1, 2025, implementation will further increase the minimum salary threshold for nonexempt employees eligible for overtime pay under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
CELT course assists faculty with AI
The Canvas course is self-paced and geared for faculty from AI novices to those with more expertise. Faculty are asked to respond to a Sept. 10 email survey on their AI use.
What's new with undergraduate tutoring this fall
Knack is a national platform that features an online scheduling app but each school's peer tutors. At ISU, it's focused on the 90 courses that historically receive the most requests for tutoring. Students have choices: individual or small group, in person or online, 30-minute sessions -- or longer.

Winter data breach impacted some employees
Change Healthcare, a large payment network in the health insurance industry that connects doctors' offices, pharmacies and hospitals with health insurers, experienced a data breach in February. Letters to impacted employees recommend steps to protect your financial accounts and credit files.

Celebrate the Campanile's 125th year
The Iowa State community will observe 125 years for the campanile and Stanton Memorial Carillon with a free public event Sunday, Sept. 15 ( 2 p.m., north of the campanile). It will feature stories about its inspiration and legacy, remarks from President Wendy Wintersteen and numerous musical performances. An RSVP is requested.
Clone Cone, vintage logos and fight song inspire designers
Three winning designs from the inaugural "Cyclones Take New York" clothing design competition are on campus shelves at Innovate 1858 and the ISU Book Store, and the top two designers went to New York Fashion Week, Sept. 6-11. Designers were challenged to appeal to Cyclone fans looking for clothing outside of traditional athletic apparel.
Ag and Life Sciences uses art to inspire
A pair of art installations on the fourth floor of the Student Innovation Center culminate three years of work from students, faculty and staff to show innovation in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. One is a mural of ag scenes interwoven with aspects of life sciences; the other is a swarm of 3D-printed bees and pollen.
Work toward an alternative to bone marrow transplants
ISU researchers discovered when and why inflammatory signaling affects the formation of blood stem cells in embryos, which will benefit efforts to develop lab-grown, patient-derived stem cell transfusions to treat blood disorders. The promising advancement in regenerative medicine could eliminate the need for bone marrow transplants.

Cyclones versus Hawkeyes on the pitch
The women's soccer team looks to keep the momentum going in the Cy-Hawk series when it hosts Iowa on Sunday, Sept. 15 (1 p.m.) at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Admission is free, and the Cy-Hawk football trophy will be on display.
Music and art in the gardens
Iowa folksinger and artist Chad Elliott will have a "Paint the Park" concert stop at Reiman Gardens on Sunday, Sept. 15 (10 a.m.-5:30 p.m.). Elliott will paint a scene in the gardens in the morning, followed by a drop-in painting opportunity for guests and live concert with cash bar at 3:30 p.m. Admission is $2 off gardens admission (free for members and ISU students).
