A Cyclone satellite in space

Cy SAT, a satellite conceived and designed entirely by students, is orbiting Earth and will spend the next several months gathering soil moisture data. The project was part of aerospace engineering's Make to Innovate course that features hands-on projects to enhance student understanding of engineering fundamentals.


Sensory friendly concert breaks ground for Wind Ensemble

Members of the neurodiverse audience are welcome to express their delight and excitement at any moment during the band's Oct. 25 concert in Tye Recital Hall. All are welcome.

Gardens' program takes on hunger and nutrition

Heading into its final week, Reiman Gardens' voluntary Grow and Give program had distributed more than 15,000 of fresh vegetables and fruits to nine Story County food pantries this growing season. Local residents plant an extra row or two in their summer gardens and bring their produce to the gardens Monday mornings for distribution to the pantries.


ISU genetics research team receives $4 million 

Iowa State geneticists will receive $4 million over four years from the National Institutes of Health to refine their tools to study genetics of health and disease in freshwater zebrafish (which share about 70% of their genome with humans). The funds will support training of other researchers and students.


A proposal to find and fill rental housing

Housing researcher Jane Rongerude, community and regional planning, believes rental registries -- a public database of rentals -- would contribute to greater stability in cities' housing markets and improve communication between local government and residential property owners.


LAS Study Abroad will launch seven programs

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences is launching seven programs this academic year. Students can explore destinations ranging from the bustling streets of Taipei, to the medieval castles of Portugal, to a floating leadership laboratory in the Bahamas. Some of the programs offer hands-on opportunities that tie directly to students' professional interests.

Arts and events

Football team is 6-0 for first time since 1938

The ninth-ranked Cyclone football team hosts the University of Central Florida on Saturday, Oct. 19 (6:30 p.m., Jack Trice Stadium) as it strives to remain perfect in Big 12 Conference play. The game will be televised on Fox Sports 1 and available on the Cyclone Radio Network. Resale tickets are available through Ticketmaster.


Sustainability celebration is Oct. 21

Get out of the office for a bit Monday and head to central campus for a fair of sustainability-minded student organizations, campus groups and local businesses highlighting their activities, initiatives and products. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., enjoy free bike tune-ups from recreation services and fall-inspired refreshments, and earn green-minded prizes. The office of sustainability hosts this event.


Entrepreneur's public lecture is Oct. 22

Entrepreneur Daymond John, founder of the hip hop apparel company FUBU and investor on the ABC television series "Shark Tank," will share his strategies for building successful brands in a public lecture, "5 Shark Points: Fundamentals for Success in Business and Life," on Tuesday, Oct. 22 (7 p.m., MU Great Hall).
