One-day vaccine clinic is Nov. 7

Iowa State faculty and staff can receive a COVID-19 and flu vaccine in a single visit. Regular and high-dose flu vaccines will be available at the State Gym clinic.


Spalding to continue in economic development role

David Spalding has agreed to continue in his role as vice president for economic development and industry relations when he steps down next summer as dean of the Ivy College of Business.


Testing upgrades boost student experience, expand possibilities

Strategic plan support renovated a Carver Hall testing location. The Durham testing center relocated to the east side of campus to better serve students. The changes also create opportunities to proctor professional licensure or graduate school admission exams.

Eyewear benefit offers more coverage in 2025

The key change in the 2025 Avesis plan is full coverage of five eyewear lens enhancements, including scratch-resistance, anti-reflective and ultra-violet screening. Previously, the benefit covered about half the cost on these upgrades.

Assistance continues to Iowans in recovery mode

Extension and Outreach will use FEMA funding to assist Iowans in 20 counties hit hard by natural disasters this summer.


Cybersecurity delivered with rhymes and rhythm 

Cybersecurity outreach and education specialist Doug Jacobson is supporting "Cyber House Rock!" to help people learn a few basics about securing their digital information. The music video series, with more to come, launched Oct. 30 during Cybersecurity Awareness Month.


Zinc could fight antimicrobial resistance 

Molecular microbiology associate professor Melha Mellata led a team of researchers who found that zinc supplements may be an inexpensive, effective antidote to antimicrobial resistance. It's estimated that by 2050, two million people could die annually from drug-resistant infections.

A Homecoming tradition

The ISU Alumni Association's annual Honors and Awards ceremony is Friday, Nov. 1 (1:30 p.m., Stephens Auditorium, dessert reception follows). More than 40 recipients of awards from each college, the Memorial Union and the alumni association will be recognized. The ceremony is free and open to the public.


Monday: A day of basketball at Hilton 

The Cyclone men's and women's basketball teams get their seasons started Nov. 4 at Hilton Coliseum. The eighth-ranked women host Chicago State (11 a.m.) while the fifth-ranked men's squad welcomes Mississippi Valley State (7 p.m., Stripe Hilton night). Single-game tickets to both contests are available through Ticketmaster.


Three minutes (or less) to get the job done

Eight graduate students who advanced out of an Oct. 23 preliminary event will compete in the final round of the Graduate College's 9th annual Three Minute Thesis competition on Thursday, Nov. 7 (6 p.m., MU South Ballroom). The competition compels graduate students to describe their research in three minutes with a single slide, and in a relatable way for a non-specialist audience. 


Opera and elegance come to Fisher Theater

ISU Theatre, ISU Symphony Orchestra and ISU Opera Studio bring "Die Fledermaus" to Fisher Theater from Nov. 7-10 (7:30 p.m., Nov. 7-9; 2 p.m., Nov. 10). The two-hour operetta is a farce of mistaken identity, love and a practical joke with unforeseen consequences. Tickets ($25 general admission, free for youth and students) can be purchased at the door, through the Iowa State Center ticket office or Ticketmaster.
