Partial renovation of Scheman enters final month

When the work wraps up around Feb. 1, Scheman Building will continue to operate as a multipurpose meeting center. The renovated spaces and restrooms also will expand the athletics department's capacity to host fans prior to competitions next door at Hilton Coliseum.

Amelia Cepeda began serving as director of university housing on Jan. 2. She previously served in the department of residence as director of administrative services and (since September) interim director of residence life and conference services.


Legislative session opens Monday

Iowa State has requested nearly $11.8 million in new appropriations from the state for the fiscal year that begins July 1. The seven specific requests focus on enhancing Iowa's rural economy and supporting Iowa businesses.


Effort continues to improve student mental health offerings

In the second year of a four-year process, a task force is meeting regularly to work on 18 objectives this fiscal year. Task force members -- ranging from vice presidents to students -- bring different expertise and knowledge.

A century for Parks Library

The university has had a library since it opened in 1869. But since 1925, the library's home has been at Parks. A 3-minute video celebrates the centennial and touches on the evolution of library services in those 10 decades.


Fear tactic can backfire on cybersecurity companies

In an essay for The Conversation, University Professor of electrical and computer engineering Doug Jacobson explains how cybersecurity companies that use fear to sell their products may leave users feeling helpless. Users may become dependent on security technology, but lack the confidence to use it safely, creating even more opportunities for people with malicious intent to exploit them.


Extension releases updated community data reports

ISU Extension and Outreach has updated its Data for Decision Makers reports for the state and Iowa's counties and cities. The reports include new data from the American Community Survey, which is conducted annually, and reflect five-year combined data from the years 2019-23.


Crop shows strong potential for carbon sequestration

Agronomy associate professor Andy VanLoocke's study showed advanced planting techniques can triple the amount of biomass produced by the perennial crop miscanthus in its establishment year. This would significantly increase the plant's potential to store carbon and improve its economic viability for producers.

Arts and events

2025 gymnasts open home schedule this week

The Cyclone gymnastics team hosts the first of five home contests on Friday, Jan. 10, a tri-meet with the University of Iowa and Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island (6:30 p.m., Hilton Coliseum). General admission season tickets are $20; single-meet tickets are $5. The gymnastics entry in the Cy-Hawk series is a March 7 dual meet in Iowa City. 


Cyclones host Jayhawks on Wednesday

Resale tickets via Ticketmaster are available for the Jan. 15 men's basketball game between No. 3 Iowa State and No. 11 Kansas. Tip-off is at 6 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
