A worldwide commitment to recruiting Cyclones

Jorge Calderon and admissions' international recruitment team use different events and approaches to pitch Iowa State to prospective students. An effort to meet students and families at more events across the world has positively impacted international enrollment.


January paychecks reflect several Jan. 1 changes

Performance-based salary increases, more changes to Iowa income tax and insurance premium increases likely add up to a new take-home number on paychecks this month.


Annual Carver celebration also will honor Patterson

During a Feb. 3 celebration, the university community will remember two accomplished alumni, George Washington Carver and Frederick Douglass Patterson. Those planning to attend are asked to register by Monday, Jan. 27.


Reminders for university employees about political advocacy

University advocacy efforts are led by the Iowa Board of Regents in coordination with the president's office. Employees may participate in the political process on personal time, using personal resources and taking care to note they speak as a citizen, not a university employee.

Training 'cyber talents' to protect national infrastructure 

The National Science Foundation is providing scholarships for Iowa State graduate students, $3.7 million over five years. The CyberCorps grants will help students develop cybersecurity skills in exchange for government service later protecting critical infrastructure.


CyBIZ Lab helps launch a musical

Finance professor of practice Todd Ortberg collaborated with students through the CyBIZ Lab who helped him market, merchandise and budget for his project, "Poe: a Rock Musical." Their research gave Ortberg a business model so he could concentrate on other aspects of the show.

Arts and events

Cyclone Cinema resumes this week

Student Union Board has announced 13 film titles for Cyclone Cinema's spring season. The films are recent and the price is right (free). Films show Thursday-Sunday (7 p.m., 101 Carver). The series opens tonight with DreamWorks Animation's "The Wild Robot."


Two sports, one arena floor

The Cyclone wrestling and gymnastics squads will share Hilton Coliseum Friday, Jan. 24 (7 p.m.). The gymnasts compete against Simpson College while the wrestlers simultaneously host Oklahoma. Tickets are $10 (youth $5).


Students fill Beardshear with their music

Join the Iowa State Singers for a concert of 10 Renaissance madrigals on Friday, Jan. 24 (7:30 p.m., Beardshear Hall, use south entrance). The students will sing in the rotunda area on the second level; audience members are welcome to join them there. The concert is free and short -- about 30 minutes -- and seating isn't provided (pack a folding chair if you'd like).


ISU hosts North America meat competition

The Meats Laboratory will host more than 30 processors -- and their 630 sausage and ham products -- from the U.S. and Canada Jan. 27-30 in Kildee Hall. Faculty, staff and students are welcome to stop by; samples will be available.
