Regent university presidents visit legislative committee

President Wendy Wintersteen outlined Iowa State's FY2026 new appropriation requests for seven initiatives that would enhance Iowa's rural economy and support Iowa businesses.

On Tuesday, these 17 Iowa State programs will illustrate for legislators how Iowa State innovation builds the state's economy, supports its nation-leading agricultural industry and prepares students for future careers.

If you own a name that's prone to mispronunciation, Workday offers a task that lets users submit an audio clip, a phonetic spelling or both in their profile.


Students develop life skills in this culinary lab

In opportunities like the Culinary Boot Camp in the Student Innovation's culinary lab, students from all majors learn essential cooking techniques while earning course credits and considering nutrition, food safety and strategies to reduce food waste.

Advancing humanoid robots with an eye on safety

Bowen Weng, assistant professor of computer science, is developing and testing ways to make robots -- both human- and dog-like -- more physically advanced. He also is developing standards to make robot-human interactions safer, consistently.


Private clubs' impact is more than social

A first-of-its-kind study by professor SoJung Lee, apparel, events and hospitality management, sheds light on the immense role private clubs -- such as golf, yacht or tennis -- play in the U.S. economy. That  includes a collective $32.6 billion in revenue and employment for nearly 575,000 people.

Arts and events

ISU Theatre puts on spelling bee

"The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" musical follows a group of impassioned adolescents -- and audience participants -- in a spelling competition. Next week's showtimes are 7:30 p.m. March 6-8, and 2 p.m March 9, in Fisher Theater. All tickets are general admission ($25 for adults, free for youth and ISU students). 


CyCans night at basketball home finales

The Cyclone men and women's basketball teams play their last regular-season games at Hilton Coliseum this week: Sunday (3 p.m. vs. Kansas State) for the women and Tuesday (8 p.m. vs. BYU) for the men. Members of Iowa State's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will collect canned goods, non-perishable foods and monetary donations prior to the contests to be distributed to Ames-area food pantries.


Dance, the physical embodiment of music

Ballet Des Moines returns to Stephens Auditorium for a Sunday matinee performance where dancers and musicians share the stage. "See the Music" (Hear the Dance) features a collaboration between the ballet company and New York City-based Aizuri Quartet and a four-part work,"Four Seasons," in which master pianist Douglas-Jayd Burn joins the dancers on stage. The performance begins at 2 p.m.; tickets ($35-$85) may be purchased via Ticketmaster.


Orchestra concert features concerto performances

The ISU Symphony Orchestra's March 2 concert (4:30 p.m., Recital Hall, Estes Music Building) will include concerto performances by five students who won their honored spots in a competition: Quinlan Hall on trombone, Timothy Gibson on cello, Aubrey Garretson on flute, James Garcia on clarinet and mezzo-soprano Carlee Carpenter. Tickets are $5 at the door.
