The 25-minute course in Workday Learning features interactive modules that demonstrate to faculty and staff how to connect students to academic and wellness support services. The training also provides tips for effective conversations with students in need.

ISU students help children learn about healthy eating

Food science and human nutrition clinical associate professor Maren Wolff's students developed cooking videos for children that keep messages simple and understandable for young viewers. The first videos are part of Clover Power Cooking School through ISU Extension and 4-H Youth Development's Healthy Living programming.


Understanding how force is transferred 

In an essay for The Conversation, Jacqueline Reber, earth, atmosphere, and climate associate professor, discusses how force on small, hard particles -- for example, sand grains or pills -- is transmitted on more than a single layer of the particles. A better understanding of these "granular systems" may lead to a better understanding of why things like rockslides occur.

Arts and events

Distinguished Awards ceremony is Friday

The ISU Foundation and ISU Alumni Association will present the university's most distinguished awards to alumni and friends during a program Friday, May 2 (2 p.m., Sukup End Zone Club, Jack Trice Stadium, reception follows). The public is welcome.


Music, film, theater all over town

The Student Fringe Festival -- short plays and short films created by students -- is Friday through Sunday at two campus and two Ames venues. The festival concludes Sunday evening (7:30 p.m., Fisher Theater) with a 150-voice choral theater. All events have free admission.


Student to be crowned the next Cyclone Voice

Fourteen students who emerged from an April 21 preliminary round will compete in the Cyclone Voice finals on Saturday, May 3 (7 p.m., doors open at 6:30 p.m., MU Great Hall). New York-based pop rock band American Authors ("Best Day of My Life") will host the competition and perform its own set during the judges' deliberation. Admission is free and the public is welcome. 


Final softball series of the season: Cyclones vs. Bears

The Baylor Bears are in town May 2-4 for a trio of games with the Cyclone softball squad: Friday (4 p.m.), Saturday (1 p.m.) and Sunday (noon) at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Admission is free. The "bark at the park" promotion was rescheduled to the May 2 game.


Cy's Finals Frenzy begins Sunday

As prep week begins, students can choose from a variety of social and study options in and around the Memorial Union during Cy's Finals Frenzy, May 4-6. Many of the staff/faculty volunteers slots are filled; some remain.

Colleges and the makerspaces will take turns hosting activities, talks and displays during the five days of the IGNITE Innovation Showcase, May 5-9 (daily schedule varies, Student Innovation Center).
