Community will celebrate an estimated 4,770 graduates this weekend

Iowa State's spring class of 2025 includes an estimated 3,955 undergraduate students, 528 students earning a master's degree, 138 students earning a Ph.D. and 149 Doctor of Veterinary Medicine candidates.


Capturing commencement memories to last a lifetime 

Information technology's audiovisual live events team will provide livestreaming and recordings for the three undergraduate ceremonies, Graduate and Veterinary Medicine college commencements, five college convocations and an engineering department celebration this week.


Kristen Constant reappointed as CIO

Constant, who has served in the role since 2017 (including an interim role for 2.5 years), has been appointed to a second five-year term as vice president for information technology services and chief information officer.


Rejuvenated child care facilities delight ISU families

About $1.1 million in several 2022-31 strategic plan awards, combined with $442,000 in other university funds, covered improvements to two campus child care locations that included building security upgrades, new heating/cooling systems, playground and classroom improvements and lighting replacements.


Provost summarizes faculty advancement data

Also on the final Faculty Senate agenda of the academic year: Approval of the sixth Degree of the Future, an interdisciplinary program in digital storytelling; new section in the Faculty Handbook to reflect current practices on faculty salary policies and procedures; and seating elected senators and officers.

Maddens endow museums leadership post

Former university leaders Warren and Beverly Madden have provided a gift commitment to endow the University Museums director and chief curator position, held by Lynette Pohlman since 1980. At a May 9 medallion ceremony, Pohlman formally was installed as the inaugural holder.


Landscape architecture student works chosen for rural site

Two large sculptures by fifth-year College of Design students were selected for permanent installation at Art Farm Iowa near Northwood. The Crib, a galvanized steel corn crib representing the delicate balance between agriculture and the natural environment, and Cornnectivity, a seven-foot, 3D-printed sculpture meant to challenge the harmony between nature and technology, will be unveiled this weekend.


Improving online learning with intermittent quiz questions

In an essay for The Conversation, psychology professor Jason Chan found inserting brief quiz questions into an online lecture can boost learning by holding students' attention and may reduce racial achievement gaps, even when students tune in from distracting environments.

Arts and events

Graphic design show transitions students to the real world

A May 15 evening show in downtown Des Moines will feature the final projects of 82 graduating graphic design seniors -- for example, a shuttered Santa Fe school reimagined as a boutique hotel, branding for a fictional Iowa NBA team or workspace redesigns that prioritize employee well-being and integrate advanced technology. The free event is at the Community Choice Credit Union, Hall A (6-8 p.m., remarks at 6:30 p.m.).


New Deal murals are focus of Sunday tour

Learn about some of the earliest works in Iowa State's Art on Campus collection at a tour of the Grant Wood murals in Parks Library on Sunday, May 18 (2-3 p.m., meet at the murals, first floor). The murals began as a federal Works Progress Administration project during the Great Depression.
