Paid leave for new parents arrives July 1

A new state law provides four weeks of paid leave for a parent who gives birth or adopts a child and one week of paid leave for a non-birthing parent. Eligibility mirrors that for federal Family Medical Leave Act leave.


Presidential search committee meets next week

The 12-member search committee tasked with identifying a successor to President Wendy Wintersteen will meet for the first time on Tuesday, July 1 (9-11 a.m., 2510 Beardshear). The meeting will be livestreamed on the Iowa Board of Regents website.


Surplus team finds the best solution for excess property

Weekly sales on Airport Road may be the face of ISU Surplus, but the team also uses online specialty sales, a government auction site, salvage contracts and re-use through the state's waste exchange program to dispose of university equipment.


First Degree of the Future graduates set for August

Launched in January 2023, Iowa State Online focuses on serving workforce professionals looking to reskill or upskill in their careers. The first cohort from the master's program in digital health is set to graduate soon.


Five questions with a term faculty researcher

Materials science and engineering associate teaching professor David Eisenmann is balancing research projects that involve a team of graduate and undergraduate students, and spent a few days this summer at Eastern Iowa Community College to teach working professionals. He'll be back in the ISU classroom this fall.


As summer heats up, consider ways to conserve energy

Making conservation efforts a regular habit will benefit campus when peak alerts require the ISU power plant to take steps to assist with demand across a 15-state electric grid network.


Regents approve fall tuition increase

The Iowa Board of Regents also had an initial discussion about a proposed policy that would prevent regent university instructors from including "substantial" content on diversity, equity and inclusion or critical race theory in a required course unless the board approved an exception.

Dorhout shares plan for stop-gap research funding

The temporary program for FY 2026 will provide funds for impactful research across the Iowa State research enterprise that has been terminated. Funds are limited and awards will be prioritized, with graduate students near completion of their degrees given the highest priority.


Cybersecurity certificate program will help address demand

When it launches this fall, Iowa State's new, online undergraduate certificate in cybersecurity will strengthen the skills of workers and help build the state's workforce. Designed for IT workers with a two-year degree, it can be completed in one to two years.


Challenged by a silo

A spring student-staff collaboration in the ag and biosystems engineering department created a portable replica of a 1910-era silo that will join an indoor historic farm exhibit at the Iowa State Fairgrounds. An online auction this summer of the farm components will benefit its sponsor, the Iowa Barn Foundation. 


Legal deserts continue to expand in rural counties 

Researchers found that more than half of the 2,307 rural counties in the lower 48 states have an insufficient number of practicing private attorneys. The shortage diminishes access to justice and stacks the deck against young lawyers, providing fewer opportunities to take over an established firm.

  • Brenda Allen, associate director of operations, ISU Extension and Outreach, to interim assistant vice president for operations, effective July 1
  • Mark Licht, associate professor of agronomy, and Steve Whitham, professor of plant pathology, entomology and microbiology, to co-directors of the Iowa Soybean Research Center, effective July 1

Events

Frankie Valli concert is Sunday evening

Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons, joined by The Rascals, stop at Stephens Auditorium for a June 29 concert (7:30 p.m.). Tickets ($45-$145) may be purchased via Ticketmaster.


Independence Day fireworks

On Thursday, July 3, Reiman Gardens will remain open through Ames' fireworks display at dusk. Visitors may bring folding chairs and coolers with food and drinks; no fireworks or sparklers are allowed inside the gardens. Garden admission applies ($12 general admission, $6 youth ages 2-12 years, free for members and ISU students). The gardens also are open July 4 (9 a.m.-5 p.m.).
