First course designed for Cyclone Civics launches next month

The first new course in the Center for Cyclone Civics launches March 23. LAS 1780X, "American Civics," is an experimental eight-week course focused on U.S. government structures, democratic principles, history and civil liberties.


What our undergraduates are studying

Finance and aerospace engineering leap-frogged to the No. 2 and No. 3 spots this spring in a peek at the most in-demand majors among Iowa State undergraduates. Mechanical engineering maintained the top spot among all undergraduates as well as male students -- as it has for at least a decade. 


Talk with TIAA consultants throughout your career

All ISU employees, including those with IPERS and no supplemental plans with TIAA, may talk with a TIAA financial consultant about planning for their retirement. This service is part of the ISU benefits plan with no additional cost to employees. This week, learn about common needs at four phases of a career.

ICYMI: Inside Impact added five stories this week

A new edition highlights some of the generous programs that contribute to a rich, full experience for Cyclone undergraduates. Three of the stories feature several of our nine High Impact Practices. Also included is a peek into the residence department's "house" system and a video story about Cyclone Alley on gameday at Hilton Coliseum. 


Sustainability events are next week

The annual symposium, March 2-3 in the Memorial Union, includes Sustainapalooza and a keynote address by sustainability expert, TV personality and book author Ashlee Piper. 


New approach to studying malaria could help eradicate it

Sudhir Kumar, assistant professor of biomedical sciences, is investigating how the malaria parasite replicates on a molecular level. Understanding this could be the first step in discovering more effective vaccines that block the transmission of malaria and help eradicate the disease.

Events

Chamber music event is Saturday

Ames Town & Gown Chamber Music Association, in cooperation with the music and theatre department, will hold its annual Musicale on Saturday, Feb. 28 (7-10 p.m., St. John's by the Campus Church, 2338 Lincoln Way). Tickets are $50 (students $15).


Hoops at Hilton

The fourth-ranked Iowa State men host No. 16 Texas Tech on Saturday, Feb. 28 (3 p.m.) in a Big 12 Conference matchup. Tickets are available online.


Two bands, one concert

Iowa State's Concert and Campus student bands will present a joint concert on Saturday, Feb. 28 (3 p.m., Ames City Auditorium, 520 Sixth St.). Tickets are $10 (free for ISU students and youth under 18 years), and may be purchased at the door.


Greet the Cooks

On his first day in Beardshear, faculty, staff and students are invited to a welcome reception for President David Cook and First Lady Katie Cook. A drop-in event will be held Monday, March 2 (3-5 p.m., ground floor of Beardshear Hall, no program). Refreshments will be served.
